Cedar Waxwings

I saw my first Cedar Waxwing in Nottingham City Center. It was a first for Britain and this single Cedar Waxwing was with a hundred or more Bohemian Waxwings as they’re called now. There was a line of Cotoneaster trees I think they were that were all covered in berries. Wasn’t long before the Waxwing horde descended and were gobbling the hell out of these berries. The Cedar was easy to find as it’s smaller.

This afternoon, it was not bad weather wearing just shorts and a t-shirt as I was assembling my greenhouse on the lower deck. With a killing frost of a couple of days ago, I wanted to be ready to bring my potted plants under cover for the winter. Puma and Ditto the 2 outside cats each have their own bed in there for when it gets really cold and I put a heater in there for them. Anyway, I digress, I was hearing a faint trill from the waterfall occasionally and lot's of activity from the horde of Robins. I went in and got a pair of bins and soon found a small flock of Cedar Waxwings, maybe six or seven waiting to get a chance for a drink without the rowdy Robins. At home Merlin Sound ID is always picking up their call but I rarely actually see them. As it was very harsh early afternoon light I didn't rush out with the camera but finished what I was doing. A little later I got the blind setup and waited a while until the light wasn't so glary. It took a while but eventually one came down for a few seconds until the damn Robins scared it off. I got a few shots, nothing special and a pair came down but they too were scared off by the damn Robins. I'll keep an eye on the waterfall to see if I can see them again. It's not going to be tomorrow as we're in for lots of rain and thunderstorms, we need a bit of rain.

A bit earlier but not early enough.

I was out the door a good half hour earlier this morning and started off up at the Second Mountain Hawkwatch. Nothing in the way of clouds but as it's pretty dark skies up there it was nice to see lots of stars. Lots of Bambi Killer hunters along the road up the mountain and even a couple up top but any sensible deer would be laying low in the near freezing temperatures. When I left home in the woodland it was 47F (8.33C) but higher up on the mountain it was only 35F (1.66C), I should have worn gloves. From the Hawkwatch I headed down to the lake and missed a great shot of a doe silhouetted against the orange sky on the grassy hill. Stopping at several points around the lake it was nice to see the mist rising above the water. On the way back I stopped to shoot the sunburst lighting through the trees.

Late for sunrise ....again!

Yet again I got my timing wrong for getting out to the lake before sunrise, I need to get there at least 45 minutes before the actual sunrise time  to take advantage of the beautiful pre dawn light. I stopped to take a shot of the orange glow across the fields, I reckon this on the water would be gorgeous. I spent a while around the lake then up to Second Mountain to take a few more shots of the fall colors.

Fall Colors

A couple from the backyard after a near frost the other night, it's really got the trees ready to drop their leaves.

Birds from my window.

It's been a while since I've done any bird photography but as the sky was overcast this morning I decided to give it a go.
